Luckily there are a heap of great apps that do the calculating, and even communicating for you.

  1. Splitwise

Living in a sharehouse? This one’s for you! Splitwise keeps a running total of who owes who what – from the last three supermarket shops, the electric bill or last Friday’s bar tab. Keep track of your expenses and send email reminders for money you’re owed. When you’re ready to pay up, a simple PayPal transfer is all it takes.

  2. Splittr

Calculate what everyone owes for their own entrees (because who can afford to pay for someone else’s lobster) and split shared items like sides and drinks, this app also sends a copy of the split bill to the rest of the group via text or email.

  3. Facebook

Yes you heard right, Facebook are already using their Messenger service to allow peer-to-peer payments in the U.S and have just won a patent to bring it to Australia. Request a payment and have it processed simply by clicking the dollar sign button in your group chat. Perfect for splitting bills or chipping in for your best mate’s birthday gift.

  4. Bank of Me

Debts between friends don’t always have a monetary value, Bank of Me lets you track IOU’s and favours and quickly send receipts and reminders via email.
