If you’re eligible for automatic cover through your membership with us, a single form could be all you need to access up to three extra units of insurance cover.

Automatic cover may not be enough to provide for you and your family in the event of an injury or illness.

We believe everyone has the right to a decent standard of living in any circumstances, which is why we offer eligible members a hassle-free way to top up their cover.

If you're eligible, you can apply for up to three extra units of start-up bonus cover, giving you double the level of protection without  providing the same level of detail about health and lifestyle that is required in an ordinary application.

Who can apply

Start-up bonus cover is available for death only (for some occupations), death & total and permanent disablement, and income protection insurance.

To be eligible, we need to receive your application within 180 days of us receiving your first super guarantee contribution from your participating employer.

To apply:
  • You need to have automatic cover and not previously applied to reduce it.
  • You need to have joined us within six months of starting work with your participating employer
  • You need to be working in an occupation that our insurer considers acceptable for this type of insurance
  • You need to be 'at work' at the time of your application
  • For income protection cover specifically, you will also need to be working 15 hours per week for a participating employer.

As always, start-up bonus cover applications are subject to our insurer’s acceptance.

How your cover works

If your application for start-up death only or death and TPD is accepted by the insurer, your cover will go from three to up to six units, depending on the level of start-up bonus cover you have applied for.

Your extra units are either at the same insurance rating as your automatic cover, or you may be rated based on your occupation. Either way, we will write to you and let you know.

Income protection works a bit differently as it's fixed cover rather than unit based. 

Your insurance category, monthly benefit, benefit period and income replacement ratio will be confirmed at the time your application is accepted by the insurer.

We will also let you know whether the superannuation contribution benefit is included, and the waiting period and date your cover commences.

All types of cover will take effect from the date of written acceptance from our insurer.

How much you can apply for

You also have the option to apply for more cover, over and above any automatic and start-up bonus cover, as long as you apply for this extra cover at the same time you apply for start-up bonus cover.

However, there are maximum caps in place to ensure that your total cover does not exceed 10 times your salary or $1,000,000, whichever is less.

Like the start-up bonus cover application, you do need to provide some information about your health and lifestyle, and you need to be eligible to apply for this extra cover.
