A message from our CEO, Deanne Stewart

With change gaining momentum in the superannuation industry, we are here for our members.

The superannuation industry is under the spotlight. Two high profile commissions into the financial services sector and recent Government reforms are driving expectations of greater integrity and trust. The recommendations are designed to ensure the interests of members come before profit.

As a profit-for-member fund, we deeply care about the members we serve.

Putting members’ interests first is truly at the heart of everything we do, and I want to thank each of you for being a member with us.

We are seeing a push for the consolidation of super funds and we are excited to announce that we have entered the due diligence phase of our merger discussions with VicSuper. Becoming one entity will make us the second-largest industry fund in Australia, with over $120bn. This is significant for our members as the merger will give us scale, which will help deliver low fees, strong returns and better investment outcomes.

The two funds also share a similar philosophy and culture and were recently jointly awarded Integrity Best Fund 2019.

An award-winning fund

I’m happy to announce that Chant West has named our Growth fund on of the Top 10 performing funds at 7.7% for the year ending 30 June 2019.

As well as well and keeping our fees low, we are a super fund that takes the lead on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. There is a real shift occuring across the industry with regard to the effect of big assset owners, and we want to use our influence as a force for good. We are thrilled to be the only Australian asset owner to win the inaugral ESG Integration Initiative of the Year Award at the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment awards this September.

We are also proud to be awarded the Connexus award for Best Advice Offering 2019^1, highlighting our commitment to providing services beyond super for our members. The integration of our advice business, StatePlus, has now been completed and with a large proportion of our members close to or in retirement, being a trusted source of financial advice and retirement expertise is central to who we are.

What are we doing for you?

The availability of affordable rental housing is a growing challenge for the community and is particularly true for many of our members who are key workers caring for, and protecting, communities. In this edition we show how we are helping to address this important issue.

We have also been working hard to introduce a number of enhancements for members:

  • Our new mobile app is now available, giving members access to their account at any time,
  • We are offering estate planning services to all our members and are the first Australian super fund to do so,
  • We have made significant improvements to our member enquiry services technology for quicker resolutions to member queries by phone and email, and
  • Are giving members access to a brand-new member lounge at the First State Super Theatre, part of the International Convention Centre, Sydney.

You can read about these, and other member benefits, in this edition of SuperNews. Enjoy!
