Good financial decisions lead to better life outcomes. We’re passionate about improving the financial future of all Australians by supporting those who help.

Financial literacy is essential to empowering people to make positive and responsible choices about their money - choices that will ultimately affect the quality of their lives.

To help promote financial empowerment, we sponsor $15,000 to a teacher each year, through the NSW Premier’s First State Super Financial Literacy and Capability Scholarship. The scholarship enables a teacher to travel and study abroad, enriching their understanding of how financial literacy is taught in Australia or overseas.

Teachers return with a wealth of new knowledge and experience, which they bring back to the classroom, to share with their students and colleagues, helping to shape the agenda for financial literacy in Australia.

2019 winner – Rachel Noonan, Warners Bay High School Head Teacher Social Science

Rachel Noonan will use the scholarship to meet with experts from schools, universities, government agencies and other professional associations across Australia, Canada and the USA, to discuss how organisations can better work together to improve the financial literacy of young people.

Rachel, who will commence her study tour in April 2020 said: “This scholarship is an amazing opportunity for me to understand successful programs and activities developed by a range of key stakeholders.  Given the increasingly complex financial environment students face I’m looking forward to being able to help them develop their financial literacy skills and to become financially capable young adults.”

First State Super CEO Deanne Stewart said: "As one of Australia’s largest superannuation funds, we see first-hand the difference that advice and education can make to our members’ wellbeing. We believe that financial literacy is a vital skill and learning these valuable lessons in school provides a strong foundation for the future”.

If you’re a teacher currently in a NSW public or non-government school, or TAFE NSW, you are eligible to apply for the scholarship.
