Our members share their personal stories of winning $10k and what it means for them to donate to worthy charities.
Our first competition winners are a father and son, Danny and Daniel O’Brien. Danny has been a member since 2013 and as a result of recommending his son Daniel to the fund, both are now winners.
Winner 1 - Danny O’Brien
Nominated charity: Charlie TEO Foundation
Danny chose to donate $10,000 to The Charlie Teo Foundation because brain cancer & tumours have affected his family for the past 23 years. His mother was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 1996 and through excellent medical care she was able to live for another 22 years. Danny’s auntie and her 36-year-old son and father of two, weren’t so fortunate, both losing their fights to brain tumours.
Danny wants others to benefit from further research, “I am hoping the $10,000 donation from First State Super to the Charlie Teo Foundation will assist in the vital research required to unlock the mystery around the cause of brain cancer and ultimately improve survival rates in the future”.
The Charlie Teo Foundation was extremely appreciative of the donation, stating, “We are so grateful to have the support of your member and really appreciate First State Super passing on this incredibly generous donation.”
Winner 2 - Daniel O’Brien
Nominated charity: Cure for MND Foundation
Danny’s son Daniel is a passionate AFL player and Swans supporter and is donating his $10,000 to the Cure for MND (Motor Neuron Disease) Foundation. His admiration for Neale Daniher, former Australian rules footballer and coach, and his personal quest to raise money and awareness for Cure for MND while fighting MND himself, inspired Daniel.
“We can only beat this disease through continued research and clinical trials. I'm hoping your kind contribution can help unlock some of the answers to the mystery of MND”.
“We are very grateful for his generous donation and your competition that allowed Daniel to donate to us.” - Cure for MND
Winner 3 - Kerrie O’Keeffe
Nominated charity: Olive McMahon Lodge & Cancer Council Queensland Toowoomba
Kerrie lost her husband to lung cancer three years ago and was diagnosed 6 months later with breast cancer. She has decided to donate $10,000 to the Olive McMahon Lodge & Cancer Council in Toowoomba, Queensland, where she stayed for 6 weeks of radiation therapy, and use the other $10,000 for a long-awaited trip overseas!
“THANK YOU for selecting Cancer Council Qld for your recent windfall from First State Super! The money will be allocated to renovating the Olive McMahon Lodge in Toowoomba, so has come at a VERY good time!” – Cancer Council
