The NSW Premier’s Award for Woman of the Year award recognises an outstanding woman who has demonstrated excellence in her career, field or passion.

2018 winner Professor Hala Zreiqat’s ground-breaking research helps patients regenerate bone tissue. She has also become an inspiration and advocate for ambitious women and girls who aspire to succeed in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Professor Zreiqat grew up, studied and worked in Jordan before moving to Sydney to do a PhD in medical sciences. She is now known as a pioneer of new biomaterials and biomedical devices. This has given NSW a place at the table in a highly competitive global orthopaedic market.

Hala’s rich and varied resume includes:

  • Being the first female president of the Australian and New Zealand Health and Medical Research Council for the last 10 years.
  • Becoming the first person in NSW to receive a prestigious Radcliffe Fellowship from Harvard
  • Mentoring almost 70 PhD Masters and Honours students
  • Founder of international network IDEAL which is dedicated to improving opportunities and recognition for women around the world.

Echoing the theme of this year’s awards, we are passionate about creating a more gender-inclusive world. At First State Super, we are committed to helping achieve equality for women through their financial goals today, tomorrow, and well in to the future. With the super pay gap between men and women sitting at 42% by the age of retirement between men and women, we believe in advocating for change by providing the right support and advice.
